Honolulu Aloha Festival activities begin this week in Waikiki
Posted by Unknown | Wednesday, September 3, 2014

This weekend is the annual Aloha Festival opening ceremony in Waikiki.  The festival began in 1946 as a celebration of Hawaii's culture through music, history, and dance.  The following weeks will have activities perpetuating Hawaii's traditions through living history lessons.  The theme of this year's festival is "Mahuhia Honua" which means "World peace with Aloha".

On Saturday, September 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the Royal Court of the Festival will have it's Investiture on the grounds of Helumoa in the Royal Grove in the Royal Hawaiian Center located on Kalakaua Avenue at Seaside Avenue.  This location was the original home of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.  The Investiture is the time when the Royal Court members will take their places with cloaks, helmets, head feather lei and other symbols of their reign.

This Royal court of a king, Queen, Prince, and Princess will then be a part of the Waikiki Ho'olaulea (block party) on September 20th.  The event will have live entertainment, crafts, food booths, and more.  Then they will participate in the floral parade on September 27th along Kalakaua Avenue.  That parade is one of the largest floral parades in the United States and includes an equestrian procession, floats, and marching bands.

Bring your family and friends down to this free activity that's just a short walk from our Waikiki Vacation Rentals at the Royal Kuhio, the Waikiki Banyan, the Waikiki Sunset, and many others.  If you are staying at our other units at the Ilikai Hotel, the Ala Moana Hotel Vacation rental, or the Waikiki Marina, there is validated parking at Royal Hawaiian Center with a minimum purchase of $10.  The center has lots of great restaurants, many with great happy hour specials starting at 5:00 p.m. so you can eat before the ceremony and get your parking validated after it's over.  There are many family friendly restaurants including the widely popular Cheesecake Factory but for that one you might want to put in your name before you go to the ceremony as the wait can be long but worth the wait.
