This weekend marks the 27th Annual Great Hawaiian Rubber Duckie Race where 20,000 Rubber Duckies will race down the Ala Wai Canal in a race to benefit United Cerebral Palsy Association (UCPA) of Hawaii.

The race will start at 1:27 p.m. at the Kalakaua Street bridge over the Ala Wai, just a short walk from our vacation rental units at the Royal Kuhio, the Royal Moana, the Waikiki Landmark, Canterbury Place and the Ala Moana Hotel, plus many more.  Make sure you allow time to go to the Pre-Race Festivities, also, though!

Pre-race festivities happen from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at McCully Shopping Center which is at the corner of McCully Street and Kapiolani at 1960 Kapiolani Boulevard.  If you haven't had lunch, the center has several restaurants with cuisines such as Hawaiian, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Mexican.  There is also a shop called Snow Factory which has delicious 100 calorie shaved ice plus a store to pick up light groceries and many other retail shops.

There will be live entertainment, games, duckie adoptions and a duckie store.    This is where you can “adopt” one or more of the blue-eyed squeaky toys for $5 or get a "Quack Pack" for $20 including 2 duck adoptions and a T-shirt.   Participants will receive an adoption certificate with a number corresponding to one of the 20,000 ducks the association owns.  The ducks will then be loaded into yellow boxes and at 1:27 p.m. the boxes will be dumped into the Ala Wai Canal.  Volunteers will be down stream with an oil boom which will catch the ducks and serve as a finish line.  The first 50 ducks will win prizes, as will the last duck which will be the official "Lame Duck" of the day!

Since the inaugural race, UCPA Hawaii has raised more than $1 million.  All the funds from this race stay in Hawaii, and are used for various programs UCPA Hawaii offers to people affected by cerebral palsy, including a recreational program that encourages them to make friends and learn how to socialize.

Top prizes include a package for 4 for the Royal Swim with the Dolphins at Sea Life Park, the Hawaii Duck Tour for 4, a digital camera with photography school classes, Wet n Wild park passes for 4, Kualoa Ranch Adventure passes for 4, a year's supply of salad bar and beverages at Ruby Tuesday and 2  Apple iPad Minis.

It's a great family friendly, free activity to watch or to participate in for a good cause.  Check it out!
